Affirming Therapy for QTIBIPOC, LGBTQ+, Neurodivergent & BIPOC Communities in Los Angeles
Nokdu Therapy offers mental health services from an anti-oppression lens. We center BIPOC, LGBTQ+, poly, and neurodivergent communities across Los Angeles and all of California. We welcome adults, teens, couples, polycules, & families.
Therapy is Political
We offer a space where your whole self can feel held and seen in therapy.
Nokdu sprouts thrive within the harshest of conditions. They find sustenance and multiply with exuberance even during times of scarcity. In turn, they bring nourishment back to the larger ecosystem.
Nokdu Therapy was founded to serve QTIBIPOC, BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, polyamorous, and neurodivergent communities who have historically been pathologized, criminalized, and harmed by mainstream mental health systems. It's critical that you find a therapist who will be intentional in creating a safe space for you to connect and find healing. And finding a therapist who shares your identities and values shouldn't be so challenging. We hope to help fill that gap.
Our therapists bring lived experience alongside rigorous training & expertise. We work from a trauma-informed, anti-oppression lens that recognizes your struggles don't exist in a vacuum. They develop within the context of relationships, community, culture, and systems. You won't have to justify yourself at Nokdu.

You Deserve a Therapist Who Gets It
We center communities whose identities and experiences are not reflected by the service providers we mostly see in the mental health systems. You shouldn't have to educate your therapist about your own life. Our therapists offer affirming online therapy and telehealth across Los Angeles and California for the following communities:
BIPOC & QTIBIPOC
Our team understands the intersectional impacts of racism, colonialism, and xenophobia without requiring you to justify your experiences. We can support you in exploring imposter syndrome, navigating the current sociopolitical climate, and the pain of witnessing and bearing racial violence and genocide.
LGBTQ+ & Gender Expansive
Therapy for queer, trans, nonbinary, and intersex communities. Homophobia, transphobia, biphobia, internalized stigma and navigating heteronormative systems impact our emotional wellbeing, and must be taken into account in your therapeutic relationship.
Neurodivergent Communities
ADHD, autism, and other neurotypes deserve non-pathologizing and effective care. We work through a framework that honors how your brain is actually wired, not one that treats it as an illness. Masking, rejection sensitivity, burnout & executive functioning are all things our therapists can support you with.
Immigrants & First/Second Generation
Many of us have a history of migration onto occupied Turtle Island, driven by war, imperialism and occupation. We can support you in navigating cultural difference across generations, holding intergenerational trauma, and contending with xenophobia. We work with APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American), Korean, Latine, MENA, SWANA and other diasporic communities in LA.
Teens & Adolescents
For young BIPOC and LGBTQ+ teens ages 11 and up, Nokdu can support you in navigating identity, school, family, & peer relationships in a world that often disempowers youth. With all the expectations, rules, and social dynamics that are often put upon teens, our therapists will help focus on what YOU want to get out of therapy, not anyone else.
ENM & Polyamory
We are kink-aware and ethical non-monogamy affirming. We celebrate all relationship structures, and are skilled in navigating social stigma, dynamics specific to ethically nonmonogamous relationships, communication, boundaries, and navigating jealousy.
Is Therapy at Nokdu Right for You?
There's no single reason to start therapy. Many of the BIPOC, QTIBIPOC, LGBTQ+, neurodivergent, and polyamorous clients we work with across Los Angeles reach out to Nokdu when something specific finally feels like too much to carry alone. You may be looking for therapy if:

Somatic, Skills-based, & an Anti-Oppression Lens
Nokdu therapists draw upon a wide range of evidence-based top-down and bottom-up methods. While we don't subscribe to the gatekeeping and appropriation perpetuated by evidence-based institutions, we try to take back what is ours, and focus on aspects we find useful to our communities to be in service to you.
Top-down approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) & Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can offer skills to help you immediately in the present moment, as well as to make sense of what is happening when you feel distressed. Bottom-up, or somatic modalities like EMDR, Brainspotting and IFS are central to engaging in deeper work. Our deepest wounds live in the body, and do not always follow logic. Our team can help you process what talk therapy alone can't always reach. Especially for QTIBIPOC folks who carry intergenerational trauma in our very DNA.
Everything we do is integrated with an anti-oppression lens. Your therapist understands the psychological impacts that systems of oppression have had on our communities. You won't have to justify your experiences.
Things We Hear Often
Many people arrive at Nokdu after years of having to translate themselves for their therapist, or feeling like their struggles were too complicated or too political to name plainly. If any of these resonate, you're in the right place.
"I've been to therapy before, but I felt like I was paying my therapist to educate them."
"I'm the one who takes care of everyone else. I don't know how to ask for help."
"My anxiety is keeping me from living my life. I need help carrying it differently."
"I've been considered as the one that's unwell all my life. I need a therapist who won't make me feel like I'm the only problem."
"My nervous system feels raw from witnessing everything happening in the world. It doesn't feel normal to see videos of genocide and ICE kidnappings on my feed and act like everything's fine."
Therapy Across Greater Los Angeles
Nokdu Therapy offers telehealth therapy to BIPOC, LGBTQ+, QTIBIPOC, and neurodivergent clients anywhere in California. While we are based in Los Angeles, our telehealth model means we can support clients throughout the state — from the San Gabriel Valley to Long Beach, from the Eastside to the Westside, and everywhere in between. Telehealth can significantly increase access to therapy services for folks who might be too busy or overwhelmed by in-person sessions. And when your specific needs and requirements already limit who you can see in the therapist pool, telehealth allows you to see the exact therapist you've been looking for even if they are 400 miles away.
While we love to see folks from anywhere in California, our team is deeply invested in the Los Angeles community. We have deep roots in different neighborhoods of greater LA, including Koreatown, West Hollywood, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Highland Park, Historic Filipino Town, Culver City, San Fernando Valley, Inland Empire, and the San Gabriel Valley. Our therapists understand that each block in Los Angeles has a specific historical and sociopolitical context. It's important to acknowledge how different communities experience economic pressures, community relationships, specific demographics, and cycles of gentrification, redevelopment, & displacement. At the same time, we also have shared experiences unique to LA that impact our mental health, including navigating a sprawling, car-centered city, fighting traffic on the 405 and 10 freeways, and experiencing ongoing crises with ICE raids, wildfires, houselessness, and sky-high prices.
If you're looking for a BIPOC therapist in Los Angeles, an LGBTQ+-affirming therapist, QTIBIPOC therapy, somatic trauma therapy, or neurodivergent-affirming therapy in LA, we'd love to connect. All sessions are conducted via telehealth so you can access care from wherever you are most comfortable.
Common Questions About Nokdu Therapy
What is QTIBIPOC affirming therapy?
QTIBIPOC affirming therapy centers the experiences of people who are both LGBTQ+ and people of color. It recognizes that racism, homophobia, transphobia, imperialism, and other systems of oppression can have a profound impact on mental health and wellbeing.
QTIBIPOC affirming therapy is mental health care that understands identity as intersectional. Rather than treating race, gender, sexuality, culture, and community as separate topics, we recognize how they impact people's experiences of stress, trauma, resilience, and healing.
At Nokdu, we understand that experiences of racism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and other forms of systemic harm can not be compartmentalized into discrete categories. They are often woven into family relationships, workplace experiences, community dynamics, and how safe it feels to exist in the world. We hope to provide a space where you do not need to justify these realities with your therapist.
Do I need a therapist who shares my identities?
Not necessarily. But many people find therapy more effective when they don't have to spend time explaining their experiences of race, culture, queerness, neurodivergence, or other parts of their identity.

You should not have to explain every aspect of your identity to your therapist. Many clients come to us after feeling misunderstood, pathologized, or exhausted from having to explain things that feel central to their lives.
Working with a therapist who understands systemic oppression, cultural context, neurodivergence, or LGBTQ+ experiences can reduce that burden and create more space to focus on your goals. What matters most is finding a therapist who approaches your experiences with humility, curiosity, and respect.
What is somatic therapy and how does it help with trauma?
Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach that helps people process trauma through the nervous system, not just through talking. It recognizes that trauma can be stored in the body and may show up as anxiety, numbness, tension, overwhelm, or chronic stress.
Trauma affects more than thoughts and memories. It can also shape how your nervous system responds to the world. Many people notice trauma showing up physically through chronic tension, fatigue, dissociation, hypervigilance, digestive issues, panic, or a constant sense of being on edge.
Somatic therapies such as EMDR, Brainspotting, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) help clients access experiences that are often difficult to reach through talk therapy alone. These somatic approaches can support the nervous system in processing and integrating experiences that remain stuck long after a traumatic event has ended.
For many BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and marginalized communities, somatic work can also help address the cumulative effects of chronic stress, systemic oppression, and intergenerational trauma.
Do you see clients in person or only via telehealth?
Nokdu Therapy currently offers telehealth therapy for clients throughout Los Angeles and California. All you need is a private space, a device with a camera, and a reliable internet connection.

Telehealth allows us to serve clients across California while making therapy more accessible for people with busy schedules, caregiving responsibilities, transportation barriers, disabilities, chronic illness, or limited local options.
Many clients appreciate being able to attend therapy from the comfort of their own homes while still receiving high-quality, trauma-informed care. We will let you know if telehealth is not the best fit for your specific needs and help explore alternative options when appropriate.
Do I need a referral to start therapy at Nokdu?
No referral is required. You can contact us directly to schedule a free 20–30 minute consultation and determine whether our practice is a good fit for your needs.

Getting started is simple. Reach out through our contact page, by email, or by phone, and we'll help match you with a therapist who aligns with your goals and preferences.
Your consultation is an opportunity to ask questions, learn about our approach, discuss scheduling and fees, and determine whether working together feels right. There is no obligation to continue after the consultation.
Do you accept insurance?
Nokdu Therapy is not in-network with insurance plans. However, many clients with PPO plans use out-of-network benefits and receive partial reimbursement through monthly superbills.

While we do not bill insurance directly, we provide superbills that many PPO plans accept for out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement rates vary depending on your insurance provider and plan.
We also maintain a limited number of sliding-scale openings and offer a free short-term therapy program that prioritizes QTIBIPOC individuals affected by significant life events or systemic harm. During your consultation, we can discuss available options and help you determine what may work best for your situation.
What is neurodiversity-affirming therapy?
Neurodiversity-affirming therapy views ADHD, autism, and other neurotypes as natural forms of human diversity rather than disorders that need to be fixed. The goal is to support self-understanding, reduce shame, and build a life that works for your brain.
Rather than focusing on making people appear more neurotypical, neurodiversity-affirming therapy helps clients understand how their minds work and identify supports that are accessible to the way you process information and experience the world.
Therapy may explore topics such as masking, burnout, executive functioning difficulties, sensory needs, rejection sensitivity, self-advocacy, relationships, identity development, and recovering from years of misunderstanding or stigma.
For many BIPOC and LGBTQ+ clients, this work also includes acknowledging how bias and systemic barriers have contributed to late identification.
Do you offer therapy for children and teens?
We offer therapy for adolescents ages 11 and older, which can include family and parent support. For younger children, we generally recommend in-person therapy due to developmental and engagement needs.

Our therapists work with teens navigating anxiety, depression, identity development, school stress, family conflict, peer relationships, neurodivergence, and life transitions.
We take a collaborative approach that respects young people's autonomy while also supporting parents and caregivers when appropriate. Therapy is designed to help teens explore their experiences, strengthen coping skills, and develop a stronger sense of self rather than simply meeting expectations imposed by others.
Can I find a therapist who understands both neurodivergence and LGBTQ+ identity?
Yes. Research has shown that there are higher rates of ADHD and autism in LGBTQ+ communities, and the experiences of navigating both identities can shape mental health, relationships, self-esteem, and belonging. Therapy should acknowledge the full complexity of who you are rather than treating each identity separately.

Research consistently shows significant overlap between neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ communities. Yet many people struggle to find therapists who understand both experiences at the same time.
At Nokdu, we recognize that masking, identity exploration, social expectations, rejection, and minority stress can affect neurodivergent LGBTQ+ individuals in unique ways. Therapy can help you better understand yourself, navigate relationships, reduce shame, recover from burnout, and build a life that feels more authentic and sustainable.
Whether you're autistic, queer, trans, nonbinary, questioning, an ADHDer or exploring multiple aspects of your identity, you can find support that holds your intersectional experiences.
Can therapy help with racial trauma and identity-related stress?
Yes. Therapy can help you process the emotional impact of racism, discrimination, xenophobia, and other forms of systemic harm while strengthening your connection to yourself, your community, and your values.

Experiences of racism and oppression can affect mental health in ways that are both immediate and cumulative. Some people experience anxiety, anger, grief, hypervigilance, exhaustion, or a persistent feeling of not belonging. Others struggle with internalized messages about their worth, safety, or identity.
At Nokdu, we understand that racial trauma is not an individual issue. It develops within larger social, historical, and political contexts. Therapy can provide a space to process these experiences, manage overwhelm, and develop strategies to navigate a world that continues to harm marginalized communities.
What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't help?
Many people come to Nokdu after feeling misunderstood, judged, or unseen in previous therapy experiences. A poor fit with a previous therapist does not mean therapy cannot help.

There are many reasons therapy may not have felt effective in the past. Some people worked with therapists who lacked understanding of their identities or did not have values alignment. Others may have hit a wall with therapists who did not specialize in the specific areas you want support around.
At Nokdu, we believe therapy works best when you feel safe enough to show up as your full self. Finding the right therapist with the right skill set can make a significant difference in how supported and understood you feel throughout the process.
